EDSA Software Selected for Canada’s Largest Nuclear Facility
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – August 31, 2006 – Areva Canada NP, one of the world leaders in the design and construction of nuclear power facilities, has selected EDSA’s Paladin® DesignBase™ software for use in the Bruce-A and Bruce-B nuclear generators in Canada.
The generators are part of Bruce Nuclear Generating Station, the largest such facility in Canada in terms of output, and also one of the largest nuclear facilities in the world. It is comprised eight generators with a total output of up to 6,610 megawatts when all units are online... sufficient to supply electricity for two cities the size of Toronto (or in the United States, two cities the size of Chicago.)
EDSA’s Paladin® DesignBase™ software will be used for the design and testing of electrical power systems infrastructure as the Bruce Power facilities are maintained and modernized. As electrical power systems go, the Bruce Power infrastructure is among the most intricate in the world, including close to 17,000 buses and hundreds of interconnected systems. Paladin® DesignBase™ is replacing a competitor’s software.
“We are very pleased that Bruce Power is joining the hundreds of users in the energy industry who rely on Paladin® products for their most crucial power systems engineering tasks,” said Adib Nasle, president of EDSA. “Some of our most loyal customers are those who’ve experimented with other products, had a bad experience with them, and turned to EDSA to get them back on schedule and on budget.”
Paladin® products are already in use in more than more than 150 power generating plants worldwide – to ensure maximum operational safety and up-time. EDSA offers a rich family of software products that meet the demanding standards of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Nuclear Procurement Issues Committee (NUPIC) and the International Standards Organization (ISO), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a half-dozen other standards bodies worldwide.
Paladin® products are also widely used in other facilities with large, “mission-critical” electrical power requirements – such as computer data centers, airports, military bases, hospitals, petrochemical refineries, transportation networks, or other large production facilities – where electrical power outages result in downtime with costly or even catastrophic consequences.
Paladin® DesignBase’s™ sister-product, Paladin® Live™ provides an even higher-level layer of operational protection, by taking design data and calibrating it with live systems. When any “live” reading begins to drift from its specified design value, Paladin® Live™ instantly focuses on the anomaly, takes readings from surrounding equipment, isolates the potential problem, and advises operators about the precise actions required to prevent the problem from actually occurring. EDSA calls this methodology “Power Analytics,” and is the only software developer to provide this level of predictive operations management.
